It makes sense to consider steps and terraces together. Both serve the function of linking and separating different areas- both physically and visually.
Garden steps are in the most basic sense practical necessities that enable one to move between different levels but steps
can also be interesting in their own right.
Gardens should not be designed just to look at they are for living in, and you should be able to sit, eat, drink, read and relax in
them. Terraces provide an ideal setting for all of these activities. A terrace near the house makes a transition between house
and garden.
Paving is an important structural element in garden design. It allows forms an integral part of garden plans and we pay great
attention to the design and installation. THe method of laying paving is important and we at Geoff Negus Landscapes are proud
of our reputation for solid and long lasting methods of garden construction.
Our method of laying all types of stone paving:
The excavation to a depth of 225mm - 300mm from finished level depending on site conditions.
A minimum of 125mm - 175mm of MOT Type 1 granular filling (limestone scalpings) well compacted with mechanical
compactor or roller.
Laying stone on to a full bed of sand and cement.
All paving will be glued into position with P.V.A. to aid adhesion and paving will be pointed with 3:1 sand and cement.
A well built and attractive wall is a bonus without equal in a garden. It adds another dimension to the design and provides
architectural divisions where a hedge or timber fencing would be inappropriate. Walls can be built from conventional stone
or brick or in imaginative constructions in which these elements are combined in patterns with other materials. All our timber
fences and structures are constructed using the finest pre-treated tanalised timber.
Of the garden structures that provide support for plants, pergolas are the most architectural. A pergola is a substantial feature
that can have great impact in the garden and care must be taken in its design and placing.
Knots and parterres are patterns made from plants usually hedging plants of various sizes. A knot is an elaborate interwoven
pattern made from low hedging material such as box. A parterre ia an arrangement of elaborate symmetrically patterned beds. Designed on a far larger scale than a knot garden the hedging is traditionally box.
We at Geoff Negus Landscapes pride ourselves with our attention to detail. Under some circumstances we can provide a sketch of proposed works for your consideration.
